Matthew 24:36-44
First Sunday of Advent

The sermon by Pastor is based on the gospel lesson from Matthew 24:36-44. When we hear the words of Jesus about His Second Coming, we may doubt that it’s going to happen during our lifetime. Therefore, we tire of being obedient and we seek our own way. We get kind of lazy and sleepy and ignore what God is calling us to do. So, in order to wake us up, Jesus tells us stories in which something drastic happens. Jesus even uses the analogy of a thief breaking into a house in the middle of the night. However, the good news is that just before our gospel reading, Jesus makes us a tremendous promise: “He will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.” Everything else, Jesus says, must be heard in light of this promise.
