Matthew 16:21-28
Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost

We might as well face it, this morning’s gospel passage can be hard to swallow. And it’s not just because it talks about taking up our own crosses, but because it demands a complete reversal of almost everything we consider honorable, powerful and blessed. Jesus doesn’t just rebuke Peter. He also rebukes the heart and soul of a world that believes “might makes right” and whoever dies with the most power and the most toys…wins. Jesus proclaims a kingdom that’s the inverse of the kingdom of the world and He invites us into it. Thanks be to God!
