Matthew 5:13-20
Fifth Sunday after Epiphany

Jesus is both light and salt. And now, so are you! It gets personal. You are God’s light, shining in the darkness. You are God’s salt, improving the world with your presence. It's worth noting, that when Jesus chose a metaphor, to characterize who we are, he doesn't say, "You are a great army marching into the world." He also doesn't say, "You are a megaphone used in the marketplace to shout my message to everyone." Rather, Jesus says that we are "salt," and that we are "light." Small, fragile, and yet both of these substances go a long way. They can make all the difference. And Jesus reminds us today that this is who you are and what you are called to be.
