Luke 17:5-10
Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost

Pastor’s sermon is based on the gospel lesson of Luke 17:5-10. The disciples have been following Jesus every step of the way. We’re now past the midpoint of Luke’s Gospel, and with every step, following Jesus to Jerusalem and the cross has become a lot harder to do. Perhaps Jesus was a lot easier to follow way back in the early days of their journey. But now, after Jesus has taught them about forgiveness, love of others, and the way of the cross, perhaps their early faith has diminished. Perhaps that diminishment led the disciples to say, “Increase our faith!” Jesus responds to the disciples by referring to a mustard seed. If they have only a tiny portion of faith, as tiny as a mustard seed, they can perform spectacular works.
