Luke 5:1-11
Fifth Sunday after Epiphany

Pastor's sermon is based upon the gospel reading from Luke 5:1-11. What’s going on here? We may be reminded of some Old Testament “call stories.” People like Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Moses have wonderful encounters with the divine and are struck with awe. The fear of the Lord comes over them. The excuses follow, explaining how unworthy they are and ill-equipped to do the Lord’s work. Isaiah has unclean lips. Jeremiah is just a boy. Moses lacks the gift of public speaking. “Fear not!” says the Lord. And their call to ministry begins. Through the holy waters of Baptism, we, too, are called to follow Jesus and do the Lord's work. Christ forgives all of our misguided efforts of the past. The Lord has work for us to do right here and right now.
