Luke 12:49-56
Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

Pastor's sermon is based upon the gospel lesson, Luke 12:49-56. Although fire in the scriptures can represent judgment, it can also represent purification. One metaphor that is often used in scripture is the refining of gold and silver. Like the refining process, God makes us new creations through the Holy Waters of Baptism. We can remember our baptisms by daily dying to sin and being raised to life, through our Savior, Jesus Christ. This can be encouraged by reading scripture; confession and absolution; comforting the sick and bereaved; and with prayer. Getting close to Christ can be like getting close to fire. Answering the call of God can result in our being handed a torch. Like the Olympic torch relay, the flame gets passed from person to person, as we share our faith in Jesus Christ. Amen!
